Little Lessons in Gratitude: An Open Letter to Blackberry Man

Dear Reader,

Today I ate a freshly plucked blackberry, warmed by the sun.

I do this as often as I can in the summer, and every time I do, I’m reminded of an interaction I had on the streets of Vancouver about 7 years ago:

As I walked down the street one day, I noticed a man going in the opposite direction, toward me. Along our path was a blackberry bush, and as we passed each other (and the blackberries), he plucked one, raised it towards me in a “cheers” motion, and declared, “The land provides,” before popping it gleefully into his mouth.

To this day, I cannot eat a blackberry without remembering this guy; this whimsical individual who turned a blackberry bush into an interaction that brightened my day.

So I’m writing this to say thank-you to Blackberry Man, and all others like him; those who take a would-be ordinary experience and infuse it with playful gratitude. Thank you, Blackberry Man. On behalf of all of us who appreciate what you do, Thank you so much.

I’m sure that you, Dear Reader, have had experiences like this; little interactions with kind strangers or close loved ones; things that make you feel extraordinary happiness in your ordinary life. I hope you cherish these gifts.

I also hope you give these gifts, when you can.

Make magic in the mundane
for strangers,
for loved ones,
for yourself.

And appreciate the magic that gets shared with you. Appreciate the Blackberry Men in your own life. I know I will.

Best fishes,
Robin
